Miramar Weinheim Complete Again After Fire

(eap) After a year and a half of exceptional circumstances, the Salz- und Kristalltherme at Miramar Weinheim recently reopened. A fire during the night of 8 December 2024 had destroyed parts of the water park in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, including the Salz- und Kristalltherme. Whilst the water park and sauna have been back in operation since summer 2025 following reconstruction and modernisation work, the thermal bath within the existing building has been completely rebuilt. As part of the project, the interior design was revised, the acoustics improved and the technical infrastructure completely renewed. As before the fire, guests have access to three pools and a relaxation room. “Miramar is complete again,” highlight Managing Directors Lara and Nicolas Steinhart. “Guests will rediscover many familiar elements while also experiencing a thermal spa that has been modernised in numerous details.”

According to Miramar, more than 20 million euros has so far been invested in the reconstruction and modernisation of the facility, around nine million euros of which was spent on the Salz- und Kristalltherme. The total damage caused by the fire continues to be estimated at more than 20 million euros. As insurers Ergo and Mannheimer had not offered to settle the claim, they are currently involved in legal proceedings with Miramar.

For the third-generation management team, the greatest challenge was not the reconstruction itself, but rather the large number of tasks that had to be managed simultaneously. “The greatest challenge was the fact that all of these challenges came at the same time,” Lara Steinhart says, describing the past months. “We had to organise the reconstruction, take responsibility for our employees, secure ongoing operations and deal with the insurers.”

With the reopening, the water park, sauna and thermal spa are once again fully available to guests for the first time since the fire. “Guests wanted us to preserve what had already proven successful, while at the same time we used this fire disaster as an opportunity to further develop the facility in many areas. Our goal was to offer everything at the highest possible quality, and that takes time,” explains Nicolas Steinhart. Architectural firm igb Industrie und Gewerbebau from Forchheim played a leading role in the reconstruction project, while Powatec from Coburg was responsible for the pool water treatment technology.

The management team expressed particular gratitude to its more than 200 employees, the contractors involved and the many guests who remained loyal to the facility during this period. “It is only because everyone pulled together that we have reached this point today,” emphasizes Lara Steinhart. ■
