Moskaubad Celebrates Its 100th Anniversary

(eap) The Moskaubad in Osnabrück, Germany, is celebrating its 100^th anniversary today. The outdoor pool was officially opened on 7 August 1926 despite pouring rain – marking the beginning of a history in which the facility has repeatedly evolved and adapted to the changing needs of its visitors. Over the generations, millions of people have learned to swim here, spent summer days with family and friends or simply enjoyed a break from everyday life.

The first major structural changes took place as early as the 1930s. In the run-up to the 1936 Olympic Games, the original 100-metre pool was divided into three smaller competition pools. During the National Socialist era, the Moskaubad was renamed “Neustädter Freibad”. The Second World War likewise left its mark on the facility: despite severe damage, the pool was restored under British administration after the war and was able to reopen to visitors as early as 1946. In the 1950s, responsibility for operating the facility was eventually transferred to the municipal utilities company. By the time the pool celebrated its 50^th anniversary in 1976, more than six million visitors had already been welcomed at that time.

Investment in the leisure and swimming facilities continued over the following decades. An 83-metre water slide was added in the 1980s, before an extensive refurbishment and redesign in the 1990s fundamentally transformed both the appearance and the offering of the Moskaubad. In addition to a wave pool, a rain grotto and new slides, an indoor swimming hall with a variable-depth pool was built and opened in 1998, turning the traditional outdoor pool into a year-round swimming facility. As part of this modernisation, the pool also regained its original name.

More recently, the offering has been expanded further, particularly with families in mind. In 2016, the “Jungle” climbing and ropes course opened, followed four years later by the “Snake Jump” slide. In this way, the Moskaubad continues to build on its long-standing tradition as a place for leisure and social interaction while steadily developing its range of attractions and activities.

While the anniversary is already being marked today with a toast alongside the pool’s early-morning swimmers, a major family celebration is scheduled for tomorrow. Visitors can look forward to, among other highlights, a Wibit water obstacle course, various sporting activities and numerous hands-on attractions. “Since 1926, the Moskaubad has been a place for exercise, social interaction and relaxation. Generations of people from Osnabrück have learned to swim here, formed friendships and spent countless summer hours at the pool. We want to celebrate this anniversary together with the people who have supported the Moskaubad for decades and continue to bring it to life,” emphasises Torsten Krier, Head of Swimming Facilities at Stadtwerke Osnabrück municipal utilities company. ■
