New Generation Train for Oman Tourist Destination

Since September a new electric train travels between the about five kilometers long Al Hoota Cave – one of the largest stalactite caves in the Arabian region – and the Al Hoota Visitor Centre at the foot of the Hajar Mountains. The custom designed and air-conditioned train supplied by UK-based urban transport specialist Severn Lamb accommodates up to 48 passengers. It is also equipped with an audio and flat screen system to provide passenger information. The train’s use of electricity on demand eliminates the need for batteries and the down time for recharging. With these improvements, the new train has a potential capacity of 2,000 visitors and can therefore transport 1,240 more guests than the existing one. (eap)
