(eap) Around half a year after demolition work began on the Maintalbad swimming pool facility, which originally opened in 1974, the official groundbreaking ceremony for its replacement recently took place. Maintal, located in the German state of Hesse between Frankfurt am Main and Hanau, plans to combine its sports, leisure, and community offerings under one roof with the construction of a new indoor and outdoor pool facility. More than 40 million euros are to be invested in the project, with the city council having set a construction cost ceiling of 45.4 million euros. The aim is to create an energy-efficient and barrier-free facility that will meet today’s requirements not only in terms of technical and energy standards, but also with regard to guest experience and quality of stay. To support the project, the city will receive the maximum available funding from both federal and state programs – six million euros from the federal program “Renovation of Municipal Facilities in the Areas of Sport, Youth and Culture” and one million euros from the Hesse state funding program “SWIM.” The next milestone, the laying of the foundation stone, is scheduled for spring 2026, with the opening planned for the end of 2027.
The indoor pool will include a 25-meter competition pool, a toddlers’ pool, a learner pool, and a multifunctional pool with a movable floor. The swimming pool will also be equipped with a retractable roof to allow year-round use regardless of weather conditions. The outdoor facilities are set to feature a water play area, a large adventure pool, and a diving pool with one-, three-, and five-meter platforms. In addition, a year-round tube slide and gastronomy services are planned. The construction project has been accompanied since the end of 2021 by Constrata as project manager, with the architectural design and planning provided by Krieger Architekten, while Kannewischer Ingenieurgesellschaft is responsible for building services engineering. ■
