Second Edition of “Integrated Storytelling by Design” Now Available
(eap) The second and updated edition of the English-language specialist book “Integrated Storytelling by Design: Concepts, Principles, and Methods for Narrative Dimensions” by Danish creative expert Klaus Sommer Paulsen is available from today. Published by Routledge, the book provides a comprehensive toolkit for the design of modern experience and story worlds, structured into several content blocks (read the EAP book review of the first edition here).
By combining theory and practice, the book presents new approaches to experience design as well as strategies for balancing narrative with design and innovation. With updated case studies and practical exercises, the second edition continues to explore the evolution of storytelling and themed experiences, offering creatives inspiration to help shape the future of immersive narrative formats.
“[…] The first edition was built from years of practical and academic experience, merging theory and practice. My goal was never to document my experiences but to provide a toolkit of models and principles for combining storytelling and experience design – story experience design. It is inspiring to see the impressive results of others’ efforts using these tools,” comments Klaus Sommer Paulsen.
Throughout the book, practical examples of applied Integrated Storytelling are presented, including what is described as the world’s first VR musical, “Castle Gillian”, by Kevin Purcell and Victor Kazan. The VR musical is based on the novel of the same name by Irish writer Maurice Walsh and is called “Castle Gillian: An Irish Tale”. It contains a 360-degree film version for VR and digital devices, designed to make the musical experienceable in virtual reality and as a 360-degree video. ■
