(eap) US theme park Six Flags Great Adventure today presented details of its new roller coaster, previously known under the codename “Project Purple”. The record-breaking spinning launch coaster “BAKUNAWA” is set to open next year in the redesigned “The Boardwalk” themed area. Inspired by the legend of Bakunawa, the mythical sea serpent from Philippine mythology, the coaster supplied by German manufacturer Mack Rides is supposed to combine cutting-edge technology with immersive theming to create a unique experience.

Standing 382 feet (116 meters) tall, the spinning coaster will join the class of giga coasters and is expected to rank among the five tallest roller coasters in the world. It will also reach speeds of up to 100 mph (161 km/h). Riders will board the world’s first floorless roller coaster trains with free-spinning cars. These will rotate naturally throughout the ride, ensuring that no two experiences are exactly alike.

The more than two-minute ride begins with the first of three LSM launches, accelerating the train from a standstill to approximately 60 mph (97 km/h) before it climbs high above The Boardwalk. Midway through the ride, passengers will encounter the second launch – also the world’s first inverted launch. While the train is completely upside down, it will accelerate from 60 to 80 mph (97 to 129 km/h). The third and final launch will then propel it to 100 mph (161 km/h). At the top of the tower, the train will enter a spiral with a 180-degree bank, offering riders extraordinary views of Six Flags Great Adventure below and the sky above. The 3,163 foot (964-metre)-long track will be served by two trains, each seating 20 passengers. Their floorless cars will rotate independently. Riders will need to be at least 48 inces (122 centimetres) tall to experience Bakunawa.

“Over the past year, we’ve made meaningful investments across our resort that continue to transform the guest experience,” said Mike Fehnel, park president of Six Flags Great Adventure. “From Shoreline Pier and the continued evolution of The Boardwalk to enhancements at Wild Safari, Hurricane Harbor New Jersey and Savannah Sunset Resort, every transformation is part of a long-term vision to strengthen Six Flags Great Adventure as the Northeast’s premier destination for thrills, entertainment and family experiences. Bakunawa is our next defining milestone – an attraction that demonstrates our commitment to innovation while giving guests another incredible reason to visit, stay longer and return throughout the year.” ■
