Spain: Oceanogràfic Aquarium Enhances Theater Experience with New 4D Seats

Located in the Spanish city of Valencia, the Oceanogràfic Aquarium has replaced some of the existing seats in its “Mar Rojo” (Eng.: Red Sea) theater with new 4D seats, enhancing the experience for visitors. England’s Simworx has supplied the 4D seats, a total of 202, which feature in-built effects such as seat vibration, leg ticklers, back prods, water and air blast. A range of in-theater effects have also been provided by the British supplier to add to the overall experience, including wind, smoke, bubbles, aroma, snow and special effects lighting.

A motorized 3D Harkness screen retracts up and down in front of the large aquarium front behind the stage at the touch of a button. Currently, guests are provided with the choice of two films, both from nWave: “Hurricane” is a 20-minute film telling the true story of a 15,000 km journey that follows an Atlantic Hurricane as one of the most devastating natural phenomena. Additionally, visitors can enjoy “20,000 Leagues under the Sea”, a family-orientated short movie based on the novel of French writer Jules Verne.

“This has been an interesting project for Simworx and a good example of how we are able to provide an existing, operational attraction with a totally new dimension to enhance what it offers to guests [...],” commented Terry Monkton, Simworx’ Managing Director. Also, Eduardo Nogues, Deputy Director of operating company AVANQUA, is satisfied with the upgrade: “[…] The venue had operated the theatre for approximately 15 years and we thought that incorporating a big screen with 3D/4D effects would improve revenues, improve the experience and increase the overall length of stay. […] The revised theater opened on April 1st this year. It has been very well received by guests of all ages […],” said Nogues. (eap)
