Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood Opens Tomorrow
“It’s-a Me, Mario!” is a phrase visitors to Universal Studios Hollywood might not be able to get out of their heads as of tomorrow. Following the soft-opening phase of the all-new “Super Nintendo World” themed area at the Californian theme park earlier this year, the experience world modeled after the popular “Super Mario” video games by Japanese console manufacturer & games publisher Nintendo sees its official opening now. Like the Super Mario-themed area at Universal Studios Japan, which was opened in spring 2021 (also read our report in EAP issue 2/2021), the first Mario-themed world of its kind in the U.S. is set to enthuse guests with a similar offer of attractions and experiences centered around Mario and his friends.
Like in Japan, the main attraction of the Super Nintendo World in Hollywood is an Augmented Reality ride called “Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge”. In Bowser’s castle, guests can experience the well-known “Mario Kart” game personally thanks to AR headsets, virtual elements and projection mapping. In addition, the so-called “Power-Up Band” (a wristband for visitors) offers an interactive experience throughout the entire themed area. Individually or in teams, virtual coins can be collected in an associated app just like in the Mario games. In addition, park visitors can satisfy their hunger with Mario-inspired dishes at the “Toadstool Café”, a themed restaurant inspired by the “Toad” character. Nintendo merchandise products can be purchased in the “1-UP Factory” shop.
The themed area was created in cooperation of Universal Creative and Nintendo. Additional “Super Nintendo World” locations are planned at Universal Studios Singapore and Universal’s Epic Universe in Orlando, which is currently under construction. In addition, a “Donkey Kong” area will be added to the Nintendo-themed world in Japan, which is scheduled to be completed in 2024. (eap)
