(eap) After the planned Universal project in Bedford, UK, had received planning permission at the end of 2025 (see EAP News 16 Dec 2025), the next milestone has now followed: Comcast NBCUniversal and the UK government have presented the official name and logo of the future theme park resort. The large-scale project, which is scheduled to open in 2031 as Europe’s first Universal theme park, will be called Universal United Kingdom Resort.

According to an official statement, Comcast NBCUniversal has committed to investing more than five billion British pounds in the entertainment resort during the expected construction period of around five years. Further capital investment of one billion pounds will follow during the first ten years of operation. The UK government is additionally supporting the project with a total 1.3 billion pounds for regional and local transport and infrastructure measures.

By 2055, the project is expected to generate an overall economic benefit of almost 50 billion pounds for the United Kingdom. It is also expected to attract millions of visitors per year, including more than one million additional international guests.

With the presentation of its name and brand, the major project is now entering the next phase of implementation. According to the information provided, preparatory work is already underway on site, with construction work due to begin shortly. More than 100 people in the UK are already said to have been employed to work on the project. In addition, expressions of employment interest of more than 33,000 individuals have already been received. Around 80 percent of the future employees are expected to come from Bedford and the surrounding area.

The new entertainment destination will comprise a theme park with several areas, a 500-room hotel as well as retail, dining and entertainment offerings. ■
