Netherlands: It Remains Spooky – Efteling Reveals Details on New Theme Area

In January of this year, Efteling announced a major park expansion that includes the development of a new 17,000-square-foot themed area designed to give visitors goosebumps. The “Spookslot“, which opened in 1978, will be demolished in favor of the redesign for a new scare experience that will be called “Danse Macabre“, in reference to the musical piece by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The new visitor experience is planned to involve the construction of a 20-meter-high building that will rise from the center of a mysteriously designed environment. What kind of attraction Danse Macabre will be has not yet been revealed.

“For Danse Macabre, I was inspired by the original sketches and ideas for the Spookslot Haunted House, among other things. It is of course a great honour and a challenge to be able to think up something suitable for such a historic place. The attentive visitor may see some familiar elements in the future. But it will be all new: we will completely immerse visitors and they will experience the ‘Danse Macabre‘ like never before. We will keep the creepy theme and extend it through all the details in the themed area,“ explains Efteling designer Jeroen Verheij. (eap)
