(eap) Currently closed to the public due to extensive renovation works, Marienburg Castle near Hanover (Germany) is now accessible in a new way: With the digital application “Time Travel around Marienburg”, visitors can virtually explore the historic building and its rich history – while taking a real-world walk on-site.

The digital tour is based on the existing “Time Travel” app from the city of Pattensen, which has now been expanded to include a dedicated route around the castle. At 15 stations along a 500-meter circular trail around Marienburg, visitors can scan QR codes with their smartphones or tablets to access 360° panoramas, informative texts, and video sequences, offering insights into the castle’s architecture, the artistic heritage of the House of Welf, the Knights’ Hall, and the ceremonial wedding room. The lives of Queen Marie and King George V, the last King of Hanover, are also featured in the digital experience.

This app-based tour is particularly aimed at guests who currently cannot visit the interior of the castle due to the ongoing restoration. Steffen Krach, President of the Hanover Region, emphasized: “The new digital tour makes Marienburg Castle virtually accessible – regardless of the current construction work.”

The project was initiated by Hannover Marketing & Tourism (HMTG) in cooperation with the City of Pattensen, and developed in close coordination with the Schloss Marienburg Foundation, the Lower Saxony State Museum, the House of Hanover, and the Hanover Region. The concept and technical implementation were realized by the Freiburg-based agency Extended Vision. ■
