Osnabrück Schinkelbad Celebrates 50th Anniversary
(eap) Schinkelbad, located in the Schinkel district of Osnabrück, Germany, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Stadtwerke Osnabrück (Osnabrück Public Utilities), which operates Nettebad, Moskaubad and Loma-Sauna in addition to Schinkelbad, recently held a special week of activities to mark the occasion, with guests able to enjoy a varied programme of entertainment, health-related offers and family activities.
“For 50 years, Schinkelbad has been an important place for sport, recreation and social interaction in Osnabrück. Many people associate personal memories with this swimming pool facility,” said Schinkelbad Manager Jens Eick. The facility, which opened in 1976, continues to be developed further. This also includes the new textile sauna in the outdoor area, which recently opened at Schinkelbad. Stadtwerke Osnabrück had announced the sauna last year.
Stadtwerke Osnabrück also recently announced its results for the 2025 financial year. According to the report, the group closed the year with an improved result. At around 21.5 million euros, the annual surplus was above plan and above the previous year’s figure. It was stated that Stadtwerke Osnabrück would continue its course of financial stabilization in a still challenging market environment.
This development would also be important for the pool sector. Municipal pools are often viewed primarily from an economic perspective, although they fulfil much more than a purely leisure-related function, emphasized Torsten Krier, Head of Pools and Leisure at Stadtwerke Osnabrück: “They are indispensable for swimming lessons of our schools, for clubs and leisure sports, as well as for health, inclusion and integration.” The aim, he said, was not to maximize profits, but to keep the deficit as low as possible while at the same time fulfilling this important social mandate.
As in the previous year, the group result included agreed compensation payments from the City of Osnabrück for the structurally loss-making areas of public transport and pools. According to the Stadtwerke Osnabrück, operations in the bus and pool sector, among others, also developed better than planned. For example, despite the ongoing construction site in the surrounding area, Nettebad recorded more visitors than planned last year. ■
