(eap) Paultons Park in the UK has invested 1.5 million pounds (around 1.7 million euros) in the installation of solar carports in its staff car park and additional solar roof panels on eleven existing buildings. The solar modules have been in operation since March and supply the park with energy. The park is satisfied with the results so far: A total of 357 megawatt-hours (MWh) of solar energy has been generated since March, according to the park. This accounts for 84 percent of the power required to operate the “Tornado Springs” theme area with its eight rides, which opened in 2021 (see EAP 3/2021). The solar infrastructure is supported by a 430 kW battery energy storage facility (BESS) ensuring that excess solar energy is stored for use after dark.

“We’re proud to be leading the way in solar energy within the UK theme park industry. We can already generate 35 percent of the park’s entire electricity usage through on-site renewable energy. Our solar car port canopies and new rooftop panels mark the first major phase in a larger green technology project,” emphasizes Lawrence Mancey, Marketing & Technology Director at Paultons Park.

The family-run theme park has set itself the goal of generating at least 50 percent of its energy needs on-site. ■
